School of Ministry F.A.Q.

  1. How much will the school cost?
    1. Tuition is $300 dollars per term and there are three terms, which means that tuition cost for the year will be $900 total. Students also will have to purchase their own books. The price of books varies from year to year, but we tell students to anticipate between $150 and $400 total for books over the course of the year.
  2. What is the class schedule?
    1. Classes will begin at 9:00am and end at 12:00pm, Monday through Thursday.
  3. Can I work an outside job while attending the SOM?
    1. Most of our students work at least part time during the school year, but we discourage people from trying to work full time, on account of the rigors of the school. We tell our students to anticipate having about 35 hours a week of work total (including time in the classroom, homework, and practical ministry hours).
  4. Are female applicants encouraged?
    1. Yes. Although we believe that much of the training we provide is crucial in preparing a man to pastor a church, it is not the sole purpose of our School to prepare people to be senior pastors. Rather, we are attempting to share principles that will be equally as helpful to those called to be missionaries, worship leaders, children’s ministry leaders etc. For this reason, we do welcome women applicants, believing that the Lord has called women, as well as men, to give their lives in service to Him.
  5. I’m not even sure that I’m called to full time ministry, but I really like the program and would like to devote this season of my life to studying the scriptures and learning the ministry principles taught in the school. Is it ok for me to apply?
    1. Yes. Many of the students that have come into the school do not know where the Lord is calling them. What is more, many people, who come to the school thinking that they do have it figured out, often change their minds before the school year is up. Our hope is that the SOM might provide some direction in that area for those that are uncertain.
  6. Do you guys offer online classes?
    1. No. The goal of the School of Ministry is not merely to provide traditional Bible courses, but to provide a solid foundation for personal discipleship, and to immerse students into an intense and ongoing group setting, in addition to equipping and preparing graduates for the work of ministry. In order to accomplish these goals, students must work closely and personally with the instructors as well as with the other students, otherwise these goals cannot be accomplished.
  7. Is the School of Ministry accredited?
    1. We have not sought governmental or private accreditation because doing so would require us to add requirements to our curriculum that fall outside of the scope of our purpose. Our goal is merely to equip people with the skills and heart necessary to serve successfully in the ministry.
  8. What will I be qualified to do after graduation?
    1. Every student that graduates will be equipped with the tools necessary to effectively study the Scriptures on his/her own and apply them to life; to understand, apply and spread to others the full message and implications of the Gospel; and to grasp the principles that are key to serving in the body of Christ. Since the Holy Spirit alone calls people into the ministry, we cannot guarantee that a student will have a position in ministry awaiting him/her upon graduation; nor can we guarantee that a church will recognize our certificate of completion. We can say, however, that there are many churches, with whom Calvary Chapel has maintained a good rapport, that would recognize a certificate of completion from the SOM and take such into consideration as a graduate is attempting to get involved with them. In addition to the certificate of completion, the SOM Director will also provide a letter of reference for future ministry to each of the graduates.
